Boven Guest House

Boven is a beautifully restored Boer farmhouse, parts of which date back to the mid 1800's. Set in a verdant garden dominated by huge oak trees planted at the time the house was built, it is a wonderful place to relax and be transported back to a time when life was more leisurely. Kruis Fontein is a 600 Ha working farm, and your hosts, Sandy and Peter Ward, run a Jersey dairy stud as well as an American Quarter Horse stud.  The farm includes diverse environments ranging from riverine (4.5 kms of the Mooi River) through wetlands, grassveld, house gardens, cultivated farmland, pastures, dams, streams, waterfall, high mountain grassland and even some bushveld. These diverse habitats accommodate a large variety of fauna and flora, all of which can be enjoyed by guests.

Boven House sleeps eight people in four bedrooms. If necessary, two more people can be accommodated in the rondavel in the garden. It has a typical stoep (verandah) running along two sides, an ideal place for relaxation and meals. Very little is new in and around Boven, as we have tried to capture and maintain the charm of times gone by. The kitchen is fitted with an Aga stove that burns anthracite, and creates a warm hub in the house during winter. Next to the house is a thatched boma that houses the braai and bonfire area around which most evenings are spent.

The surrounding farmland contains much to excite. We are blessed with abundant birdlife, including cranes and other unusual birds such as the Bald-headed Ibis. We have archeological structures that date back to the Iron and Stone Ages. Buck regularly seen are Common Reedbuck, Grey Duiker and the endangered but beautiful Oribi. As you wander here you sense a feeling of history, both recent and ancient. The museum in Mooi River contains a Stone Age axe picked up on Kruis Fontein, which experts estimate to be 100 000 years old.

Boven is run as a self-catering establishment. This means that we provide everything other than your food and drink, including linen, firewood and anthracite etc. The house is fully serviced each day and we offer a laundry service as an extra.
